Diversity Business Resource Center Contracts With The Riverside Center For Innovation
The Diversity Business Resource Center (DBRC), a consulting and referral provider for disadvantaged small businesses and entrepreneurs, has reestablished its partnership with Riverside Center for Innovation(RCI), the small business incubator located on the North Shore of Pittsburgh.
The DBRC was originally the brainchild of the MWDBE Governmental Committee, which is a collaboration of the diversity procurement officers of the local public agencies like ALCOSAN and the Pittsburgh International Airport as well as private companies in SW Pennsylvania charged with expanding contracting opportunities for women, minorities, and veterans. The DBRC serves the ten (10) county region which includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland.
The DBRC will reestablish its presence at RCI which will add additional support and training for disadvantaged entrepreneurs. Newly hired Director, Judith Woodson McNeil, starts with a database of over 450 qualified vendors and contractors available to connect with government contracting opportunities and will seek new companies to join the network from surrounding counties. Judy has over 13 years of experience working in the non-profit community with a diversified background in financing, contracting and recruitment of disadvantage individuals and entrepreneurs.
The DBRC program will work with its clients seeking new and expanded business relationships with local government agencies that lead to significant increases in sales. This is in addition to advocating for disadvantaged small businesses on important issues such as access to capital as well as continuing to be a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs to quickly gain access to business development information. Emily Buka, Executive Director of RCI says, "This venture dovetails well with the mission and re-vision of RCI since our purpose is to create a healthy environment for the region’s entrepreneurs and small businesses by providing incubation support, training, and innovation strategies.". RCI offers entrepreneurial training, workshops, contracting opportunities and shared office services. RCI is a Pennsylvania certified industrial development company that can access state financing programs to assist in the growth of small businesses.

Community Visioning Open House
Are you interested in improving Downtown Coraopolis? How about more public access to the Ohio River? Helping to restore the Historic Train Station?
The Borough of Coraopolis along with its community partners: the Borough of Midland, the City of Aliquippa; the Borough of Monaca; and the Ohio River Trail Council (ORTC) have joined together to undertake a grass-roots effort to re-think the future of our communities as a way to respond to the changes in our manufacturing/industrial base and the post-industrial brownfields legacy that remains. The four communities combined received a $150,000 federal grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); to developed area-wide revitalization plans, primarily focused on redeveloping vacant or under-utilized properties and to identify infrastructure improvements needed to stimulate revitalization. This effort is partly an outcome of the ORTC’s initiative to provide increased access to and along the river corridor and the revitalization of the numerous blighted parcels, many of which are perceived brownfields.
The first public open house/meeting in Coraopolis is scheduled for:
Wednesday October 12th, 2011 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
The Coraopolis Community Development Foundation located at 1000 5th Avenue.
Please stop by and review initial findings and contribute your ideas!

RCI Receives $3.4 Million In EPA Community-wide Brownfield Assessment Grants.
RCI receives $3.4 million in EPA Community-wide Brownfield Assessment Grants.
The EPA estimates 450,000 brownfields--abandoned gas stations, derelict mines, shuttered factories--litter the country. Contamination at such sites from trash, oil, or industrial activity won't make the Superfund list but does deter redevelopment and lowers property values even in otherwise desirable locations.
Pennsylvania has invested over $518 million to help 1,200 sites and retain over 87,000 jobs. The PA Department of Environmental Protection is collaborating with the Team PA Foundation to inventory brownfields and their characteristics to facilitate companies' finding sites that suit their needs. Nationally, EPA's brownfields program since its inception in 1995 has disbursed almost $900 million to reclaim 25,000 acres and assess another 16,000 sites.
Some brownfields, such as the former Bethlehem Steel mill, can stretch for miles. Others may cover only the corner of a block. By focusing on smaller sites in western Pennsylvania, the non-profit North Side Industrial Development Company strives to maximize its impact.
Assessment is Critical
According to its executive director Emily Buka, NSIDC has received $3.4 million in EPA community-wide brownfield assessment grants. (NSIDC does business under the name the Riverside Center for Innovation.) The latest $1 million came in June, when NSIDC led a coalition of 20 municipalities along the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers to get funding to assess 52 acres of the former Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad maintenance facility in McKees Rocks. The DEP, working with the Department of Community and Economic Development, also awarded money to redevelop the site, which is expected eventually to bring in $13 million in tax revenue.
Kevin Sunday, a spokesman for DEP, says that revenue is especially important where the per capita income is only about $13,000. "In this case, you're looking at a site that has a direct skyline view of Pittsburgh. Most former industrial centers are near urban areas and have the potential to revitalize a community. The brownfields program is a winning proposition both economically and environmentally."
Even if relatively small, the P&LE site is the largest NSIDC has tackled. Its previous work included a half-acre gas station and 6-acre Henry Miller spring plant. Those sites, however, taught Buka that "the combination of riverfront properties, multiple municipalities, and economic development combined with brownfield redevelopment appealed to the EPA, so we took that model and recreated it. Ironically," Buka adds, "the perception is that the riverfronts in Pittsburgh, PA, must be contaminated. There are some problems, but none of them are Love Canals." Contamination at most sites can be cleaned or controlled relatively easily, improving NSIDC's bang for the buck.

Labor Day Weekend!
Labor Day is this weekend! Are you planning a road trip? Remember to plan ahead for one of the busiest highway holidays:
Getting Your Car in Shape
The last thing you want on Labor Day is a car that breaks on the road. A routine check of the engine, radiator and fluids will go a long way. Tires should be well inflated and wiper fluid should be replenished. Also, check that the steering wheel and brakes work properly. A car emergency kit should include, at a minimum, jumper wires, a tire gauge, a flashlight, a tool kit with wrenches and screwdrivers, duct tape, rags and an emergency stop sign. Add a first-aid kit, a bottle of water, a blanket and some energy bars in case something happens and you're stranded for some time.
Staying Safe
There are two major reasons for accidents on highways: losing concentration while driving and ignoring the risk of big trucks. If you are tired, had a drink or feel sick, either give the wheel to somebody else or postpone the driving. This is especially important coming back home on Labor Day, as many spend the day drinking and having fun, and chances are people are tired and moody. Monitor yourself and learn your limits, so you can head to a rest stop if you start feeling dizzy, confused or sleepy. Big trucks are especially dangerous if you cut in front of them quickly and unexpectedly, as trucks cannot brake fast enough to avoid a collision if things get tight. Also, trucks drivers have lots of blind spots, where they are unable to see you and thus avoid you. As a general rule, if you can't see the truck's mirror, the driver can't see you either.
Avoiding the Madness
The most important thing you can do is leave early. Take on the highways early Saturday morning or before rush hour on Friday. If you're driving on Labor Day, follow the same rules. Most people will brave their return home in the early evening or late afternoon. Try getting to the highways before 4 p.m. or after 10 p.m. and you should be in much better shape. Another important thing you can do to prepare for Labor Day driving is to plan your route well. Look for alternate routes, program your GPS or use a map to get you where you need to go as fast and efficiently as possible. You also can check online to see if the road you're planning to take is undergoing repairs or has scheduled lane changes, so you can search for alternatives or plan for additional driving time.

Did you know that the SBA 504 Loan Program Can be used for Equipment Financing?
Did you know that the SBA 504 Loan Program Can be used for Equipment Financing?
Many of you are aware that the SBA 504 Loan Program is a great solution for owner-occupied real estate acquisition, renovation or ground-up construction, but did you know that 504 can also be used for major equipment purchases? Many local economists have recognized an upturn in manufacturing in our region, and numerous companies are beginning to consider capital expenditures for the first time in several years. What could be better for your Bank than a 50% loan-to-value on equipment term loans? Using SBA 504 in equipment transactions is also a winning proposition for your borrower, since current ten-year debentures have an effective rate of only 4.5%!! With rates and terms like these, why would a borrower consider leasing options?
These rates are fantastic! July 2011 Rates are 5.59% FIXED for 20 years! Ten Year Rates are 4.50% FIXED!
BORROWER SPOTLIGHT: Wismarq Valencia, LLC
Wismarq Corporation was established in 1982 by a husband and wife team, Charles and Jan Terrizzi. With corporate offices based in Wisconsin, Wismarq provides “toll coating” for steel and aluminum coils, which is one of the most efficient methods of painting metal. It not only provides faster turn-around time and less waste, it is also much better for the environment than traditional painting methods. In 2010, the Terrizzi’s were approached by Ply Gem Industries, who had an interest in selling its coil coating division which was based in Valencia, PA. The purchase included toll coating equipment which would permit Wismarq to broaden its customer base by allowing the company to handle larger-sized metal coils, a service that had formerly been outsourced. The company approached Associated Bank and RDFC for an SBA 504 loan to purchase the equipment. Not only did the transaction qualify under the Public Policy Goal of Rural Development, the company was able to retain 25 current employees, and they anticipate adding 50 more jobs within the next few years. Many thanks to Wismarq and Associated Bank for their contribution to the economic success of our region!!

Or just enjoy some of these pithy quotes about our favorite dads:

"A father is a guy who has snapshots in his wallet where his money used to be." – Unknown

"A father is a banker provided by nature." -- French Proverb
"My father said, 'Politics asks the question: Is it expedient? Vanity asks: Is it popular? But conscience asks: Is it right?'" -- Dexter Scott King
"When I was a kid, I said to my father one afternoon, 'Daddy, will you take me to the zoo?' He answered, 'If the zoo wants you, let them come and get you.'" -- Jerry Lewis
"Small boy's definition of Father's Day: It's just like Mother's Day only you don't spend so much." – Unknown
