Region may have found cure for decades-long 'brain drain'

Western PA and the Pittsburgh area could see a resurgence of business activity beginning with small startups and young people fresh out of college. Pittsburgh has a lot to offer for young people and with incubator services like RCI it softens the financial blow of anyone looking to start a business for the first time.

PittsburghLive writes:

Micah Toll could have taken his electronic vehicle invention and set up shop anywhere in the world when he graduates from the University of Pittsburgh in two weeks.

Instead, the Tennessee native chose Shadyside as headquarters for Pulse Motors. His business partners, both Pitt students but neither native to Pittsburgh, also will remain in the area.

Toll designed his Personal Electric Vehicle Zero, a motorized unit that looks like a bike, to handle Pittsburgh's hilly terrain, but he never considered taking the idea to another city with similar topography.

"Pittsburgh has been incredibly good to us," Toll, 23, said on Wednesday. "The manufacturing resources are here, the factory space is available. There is a very good entrepreneur community here. Why wouldn't we stay in Pittsburgh?"

Pittsburgh's North Shore Riverfront Park

Ever wonder what went in to making the Riverfront Park on the North Shore such a beautiful and popular spot?

GrowingGreener writes:

This project involved the complete redesign and rehabilitation of a 67,00 foot segment of linear park and trail facilities along the north shore of the Allegheny and Ohio rivers.  The project area was primarily designed in the late 1960s and early 1970s as Clemente Park.

Since the time of the original park design more than 25 years ago the use of the park and the area surrounding the park has changed significantly.  Originally designed as a passive linear park complementing Point State Park, across the Allegheny, the park had accommodated a number of unforeseen uses.  River taxis, and the Gateway Clipper excursions fleet regularly dock along the park to bring visitors to Three Rivers Stadium and the Science Center.  The Steel Industry Heritage Corporation’s River of Steel Tours is planning to use the park as a landing.
